Program 3

Jewish Heritage

Saturday, February 24th, 7:30pm

Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, 130 Navy Street, Oakville
In this concert we celebrate the wonderful music of ethnically Jewish composers (plus Prokofiev, whose work on this concert is a tribute to Jewish folk style).

Rhapsody in Blue is one of the best-known pieces of American music (just think about the American Airlines commercial, that’s why they have a piano keyboard on their airplanes’ tails).  Aidan Leung will do something special with this piece that literally no pianist has done before!

It’s also our joy to present the Mahler songs, which are by turns sentimental, martial, and hilarious. L’chaim!
  • Mendelssohn – Hebrides Overture

  • Mahler – Songs from The Boy’s Magic Horn and Rückert Songs

    • Kevin McMillan (Grammy Award winner and multiple Juno nominee), baritone

  • Prokofiev – Overture on Hebrew Themes

  • Gershwin – Rhapsody in Blue

    • Aidan Leung (2023 prize-winner), piano

His performing career has spanned over 25 years with more than 750 concerts, 15 professional recordings, a Grammy award, a Gramophone award, and numerous Juno award nominations. They, as well as those who have chosen to follow other paths, have done so possessing scientifically sound and historically informed perspectives on singing.

"Kevin McMillan has enjoyed a performing career to which only the select elite of Canadian singers have aspired and fulfilled. His résumé is replete with international performances, recordings, and awards, performances in some of the world’s greatest venues and with some of the greatest artists of our time.

Mr. McMillan's encyclopedic recall, and his knowledge and instincts regarding performance practice and interpretive possibilities are extensive, laudable, and reveal his tremendous talent. He has so much to share with students in his charge, and he does so with intense dedication."
